North Sea Port has announced that two of its customers, Ørsted and Yara, are joining forces to produce green ammonia based on renewable hydrogen. In a statement issued yesterday (6 October), North Sea Port said that their joint project ‘will lead to an annual reduction in CO2 emissions of 100,000 tonnes’.

It consists of a modern greenhouse complex (100 ha today; 150 ha when completed) utilizing residual heat and CO2 from an adjacent fertilizer plant (Yara Sluiskil), supplied and managed via a cutting-edge pipeline network. Ørsted, the world's leading offshore wind developer, and Yara, the world's leading fertilizer company, have joined forces in developing a pioneering project aiming at replacing fossil hydrogen with renewable hydrogen in the production of ammonia with the potential to abate more than 100,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, equivalent to taking 50,000 conventional cars off the road. Yara Sluiskil produces ammonia, nitric acid, nitrates, urea, liquid fertilizer, liquefied CO2 for the food industry and environmental products such as AdBlue. AdBlue is an aqueous urea solution used in emission control devices for NOX reduction on commercial vehicles. The Yara CO 2 tanker fleet connects Yara production sites in Sluiskil (NL), Porsgrunn (NO), Fredericia (DK), Dormagen (DE) and Wilton (UK) to terminals in Hamburg (DE), Montoir (FR), Billingham (UK) and on the Thames (UK). The three ships, which are identical, carry the largest CO 2 tanks in Europe.
